13, Out and About
Hal enters Kiki's bedroom and says repeatedly not to be mad. Kiki gets mad because it is taking him so long to tell her why she shouldn't be mad. Turns out the arm fell off his eye glasses. It is actually good timing as Kiki needs to go to the mall 30 minutes away to return something and of course Marty has things she wants to procur. Everyone piles into the car and makes the drive. Hal and Marty are bickering the entire way. Once at the mall, Kiki tells Hal to go ahead off to the GameStop while Kiki and Marty hit a couple of stores. Hal asks repeatedly which stores they are going to go to and Kiki tells Hal to just go to his store and stay there until Kiki and Marty come for him. If he gets bored, Kiki advises, sit on the bench outside of the GameStop. Hal sets off towards the other end of the mall while Kiki takes her time gathering up various potential new outfits at New York & Co. Marty, too chicken to go to Aero and complete her return, keeps Kiki company. Suddenly Hal is back. He has walked the entire mall, he advises, and cannot find Aero. Hal wants to be sure he knows where it is in case he has to come looking for his mother and sister. Marty restates the name of the store and spells it -- Hal recognizes it once he has the spelling provided. He disappears again. Kiki and Marty take their time in their two stores and when they are done, begin to realize that the GameStop has moved and they are not really sure where Hal is. Kiki is reluctant to wander off from Aero as Hal has already appeared once to ask for money and so he can find it again if necessary. As she starts to worry, Hal is seen walking from one end of the mall towards them. They reunite and begin to head towards the exit. Hal confides he was a little anxious and walked the whole length of the mall 4x looking for them and trying not to freak out. Kiki asks what he would do if he could not find them. Hal begins to freak out a bit more. Kiki and he agree he needs a wallet with Kiki and Marty's cell phone #s in it so that he could ask security for help if he gets separated or has trouble with a store at some point in the future. Kiki is proud of Hal for keeping himself from freaking out and despite his anxiety, being able to calming walk the mall looking for his family. Marty gets upset because "everything ends up a life lesson for Hal and it is embarassing." Kiki tries to sooth Marty and point out that no one heard Kiki and Hal's conversation. Kiki knows it is hard for Marty, too, everything being about Hal, and Hal crashing their planned girl time at the mall. It is hard to suppress life lessons for Hal as his disability and anxiety are a hindrance to him, but also an annoyance and frustration to Marty.
